A Carmelite nun, mystic, reformer, and Doctor of the Church, Saint Teresa of Ávila became one of Catholicism’s greatest teachers on prayer. Her masterpiece, The Interior Castle, describes the soul as a magnificent castle with many rooms, with God dwelling at its very center. Teresa used this image to explain the journey of prayer and the gradual transformation that takes place as we grow closer to Christ.
What makes Teresa so relatable is that she wrote about prayer as something real and lived, complete with distractions, struggles, dry seasons, friendship with Christ, and moments of profound grace. Her writings remind us that there is always more depth to discover in our relationship with God, and that the journey inward ultimately leads us closer to the One who has been waiting there all along.
