The name Michael means, “Who is like God?” and perfectly captures the humility of the great Archangel. Catholic tradition remembers Saint Michael as the commander of the heavenly hosts, standing faithfully for God against Satan and the fallen angels. Where pride declares, “I will not serve,” the spirit of Saint Michael gives the opposite response: Serviam. I will serve.
That single word makes a powerful motto for the Christian life. To serve God means choosing His will over our own, remaining faithful when temptation comes, and remembering that our strength ultimately comes from Him. Saint Michael reminds us that true greatness is not found in placing ourselves above others, but in standing courageously for God and being willing to say, again and again:
