Saint Clare of Assisi left behind a life of comfort to follow Christ in radical simplicity, eventually founding the Poor Clares alongside the Franciscan movement. At the center of her life was a deep love for Jesus in the Eucharist. One of the most famous stories from her life tells of Clare, already very ill, being carried to face an attacking force approaching her convent. Trusting completely in Christ, she brought the Blessed Sacrament before them, and the attackers withdrew.
Her words, “Go forth without fear, you have a good guide for your journey,” capture the confidence that shaped her life. Clare reminds us that courage does not mean knowing exactly what lies ahead. It means knowing Who goes with us. Wherever life leads, Christ remains our guide, our strength, and our peace.
