The minimal front carries the heart of Saint Thérèse’s Little Way as a reminder to the wearer to: “Remain Little.” The prominent back completes the quote: 

“Expect Everything From God.”

Together, these words do not ask us to desire less, attempt less, or become insignificant. They describe the posture of a child before the Father: empty-handed, dependent, unafraid to ask, and certain that His grace can accomplish what human weakness cannot.

Saint Thérèse had enormous desires. She wanted to be a missionary, a martyr, an apostle, and finally discovered that her true vocation was to be love in the heart of the Church. Yet her life remained almost entirely hidden within the walls of Carmel. She did not respond by making her desires smaller. She stopped measuring what God could accomplish by the smallness of the person offering herself to Him.

Littleness Is the Truth

She understood that holiness was not something she could manufacture through willpower. She compared perfection to a staircase she was too small to climb and searched instead for an elevator that could carry her to God. That elevator, she discovered, was the arms of Jesus. She did not need to make herself taller. She needed to remain little enough to be lifted. 

This was not an excuse for spiritual laziness. Thérèse gathered what she called the flowers of love and sacrifice: hidden acts of patience, obedience, kindness, forgiveness, and self-denial. She offered God the smallest moments of her ordinary life, trusting Him to give those moments a fruitfulness she could never produce on her own. 

“Without me you can do nothing.”

Her Little Way is deeply connected to the invitation to abide. A branch does not strain to create life within itself. It remains joined to the vine and receives everything from it.

Thérèse remained with Christ in the hidden duties of each day. She allowed His love to enter the smallest places, especially the ones no one else would ever notice. Her littleness made room for Him to live and act within her.

Expect Everything From God

To expect everything from God does not mean expecting a comfortable life or receiving every outcome we desire.

Thérèse experienced sickness, disappointment, misunderstanding, physical agony, and a profound trial of faith near the end of her life. Her confidence was not built on pleasant feelings or easy circumstances. It rested on the merciful love of God, even when she could no longer feel the consolation of that love. During this darkness, she continued to practice the greatest love through the smallest acts of daily life.

To expect everything from God is to expect mercy when we fall, strength for the work He gives us, grace for the weakness we cannot overcome alone, and holiness from the One who alone can make us holy.

A Hidden Life That Bore Fruit

Thérèse lived behind the walls of a convent and died at only twenty-four. Yet the hidden life she gave to Christ reached far beyond anything she could have accomplished through worldly power or recognition.

She became the Patroness of the Missions without leaving Carmel and a Doctor of the Church without writing a theological system. Her prayer, sacrifice, and complete abandonment to God continue to bear fruit throughout the world.

Saint Thérèse shows us that fruitfulness is not measured by how impressive our lives appear. It is measured by how completely they belong to Christ.

She remained little, and God made her hidden life immense.
