In 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near present-day Mexico City. Speaking to him with the tenderness of a mother, she asked that a church be built there so she could receive the prayers and sufferings of her children. When proof of the apparition was requested, roses miraculously appeared on the hill in winter. Juan Diego gathered them into his tilma, and when he opened it before the bishop, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared upon the fabric.
Nearly five centuries later, that miraculous image remains one of the most beloved images of Mary in the Catholic world. And her words to Juan Diego still carry the same comfort: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?” Our Lady of Guadalupe reminds us that Mary is not distant from the worries and struggles of her children. She remains close, always pointing us toward her Son.
