The Kyrie comes near the beginning of the Mass, when the Church turns toward God and acknowledges our need for His mercy. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. We do not approach God pretending that we have everything together. We come before Him knowing that we need forgiveness, healing, and grace.
But these words are not meant to leave us in shame. They are a prayer of confidence. We ask for mercy because we believe Christ is merciful. The Kyrie reminds us that we can bring our weakness honestly before God and trust the One who came not to condemn us, but to save us and draw us closer to Himself.
